2020 Winter Seasonal Beer Judges Choice Awards
The Alaska Craft Brew and Barley Wine Festival is not only about sampling quality beer, but is also a commercial beer competition. Any commercial brewery can enter their beers to be judged by the festival’s professional judging panels. The competition awards Best-of-Show, 2nd, and 3rd place in two separate competitions: Barleywine (both American and English styles) and Winter Seasonal beers (see guidelines for specific categories allowed in Winter Seasonal).
Judges from across the Unites States and Canada are invited each year to support the competition. Judges are selected from a list of credentialed beer lovers having achieved the rank of Certified judge or higher through the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). Judging occurs in two rounds; on Friday evening of the festival and a Best-of-Show round on Saturday morning. National judges lead the first round panels, the second round is generally all National judges or higher, and the two Best-of-Show Panels are comprised of Grand Master, Master, and National judges. The competition uses a double-blind tasting, and the Competition Coordinator is the sole individual who knows what beers have been entered. Beers that advance to the Best-of-Show round will have been judged and advanced by four independent judging panels before making it to the BOS table. Winners are announced during the Saturday afternoon Connoisseur’s Session.
